It is the nerve that starts at the buttocks and runs down the back of the leg. It is a combination of multiple spinal nerves and is about an inch long in the buttocks. Generally, when people start complaining about pain in the sciatic nerve, it's not the sciatic nerve that created this pain, instead, it's a problem of the nerve being pinched when it leaves the spine.

Stay active and go outside. As annoying as it is sometimes to not relax on the sofa, it is really good for you to stay active. If that means walking then fine. Well, there is a fairly new one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. This treatment really seems to stop a main cause of sciatica, and I know of some persons who got rid of all symptoms within a short period of time.

The single most useful thing is a back rehabilitation course. It consisted of exercises which strengthen the spinal muscles and surrounding muscles. Also try and find a pain support group which you can attend. Others in the same situation can be a great support. Some groups also have relaxation sessions, hypnotism and other alternative remedy sessions to help their members.

Try ibuprofen,( if you are not pregnant) it helps a bit sometimes, and a hot water bottle, and lay down for a while. Also hot bath sometimes helps.

Treatment and prevention This can be cured by treating the cause that lead to sciatica such as slip disc. Doctor's can prescribe painkillers, muscles relaxants, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Average amount of exercise should be considered if pain becomes minimal. Therapy sessions are advised to strengthen abdominal and back muscles once the symptoms have minimized.

Sciatica's symptoms and complications The most important symptom of sciatica is that a pain in that runs down from the buttocks and unto the back of the leg and thighs. It not necessary that the pain stops there it may even continue down to the foot or can below the knee. The pain that one feels due sciatica has a variation nature: it can be sharp or dull, burning or shooting sensation, non-stop or may come in intervals. One of its properties is that the pain is felt on only one part of the body. Some complain about a acute or intense pain others complain about numbness or weakening in parts of the leg where it hurts the most. This can sometimes lead to serious neurological problems.

SCIATICA is pain caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve, and represents one of the most common forms of radiculopathy. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot. In addition to pain, which is sometimes severe, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg. Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body. For some people, the pain from sciatica can be severe and debilitating. For others, the pain might be infrequent and irritating, but has the potential to get worse. Treatment for sciatica or sciatic symptoms will often be different, depending upon the underlying cause of the symptoms. Never put ice directly on your skin, but try putting it into a ziptop bag, put that into a damp clothe, and put that onto you effected side buttock for about 20 minutes. This should help relax the piriformis, which could be in spasm, causing sciatic nerve pain.

Surgery for sciatica might be warranted if the sciatic nerve pain is severe and has not been relieved with appropriate manual or medical treatments. Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have any symptoms of progressive lower extremity weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control.

The sciatica stretches and information I want to share with you are great. The best one you can do is lying on your back and pulling your knees up to your chest. The point of this is to stretch out the lower back and should take the pressure off the nerves. Another stretch is grabbing onto something above your head and allowing your legs to go weak. This forces the back to stretch out and takes a lot of tension off of it.

Going to see a Massage Therapist will help alot. They can show you some stretches you can do at home to loosen up your muscles in your low back ,legs and butt, that will help out alot.

Generally, sciatica is something older people have to endure. Perhaps it's a simple matter of a hip or pelvic bone out of place. Sciatic pain is more commonly due to a back problem not a leg or knee problem. Have you had an MRI of your lower back, I would ask your Dr. about that, especially at your young age.

Oil of wintergreen, which contains methyl salicylate, is widely used externally for its anti-inflammatory activity for arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, and sore muscles.

Reasons for sciatic nerve pain There are various causes that lead to sciatic nerve pain, but the major reasons that can lead to this type of pain are: 1. Excessive pressure on the sciatic nerve: Sciatic nerve pain can be a result of unwanted pressure put on the body due to improper posture, strain in the muscles, pregnancy, overweight, using a very soft mattress for sleeping purpose. It can also have excessive pressure on the sciatic nerve due to slip disc. Some cases of sciatic nerve pain have been recorded by due to the compression of the sciatic nerve by a tumor encircling the spinal cord in the lower back. 2. Degenerative arthritis: It is also a common cause of sciatica. Degenerative arthritis also known as Osteoarthritis can be identified by certain specific characteristics like creation of bone spurs or a set of protruding bone which presses on the nerve roots. Older people sometimes may develop a medical condition called spinal stenosis, where the nerve is compressed due to narrowing of space in and around the spinal cord.

Sciatica is a condition in which pain shoots down an leg or arm as a result of a pinched nerve. Pain that runs along the course of the sciatic nerve is referred to by laypersons as sciatica. It especially appears in the back of the thigh also causing pain in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and/or adjacent parts. Sciatica is pain caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that are branches of the sciatic nerve. The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot.

A lot of people don't understand what is happening, but it's really quite simple. There is some sort of nerve being pinched in some manner. This could be happening from a spinal disc compressing too far and a nerve gets pinched. It can also happen from a tight back muscle that literally strains a nerve to the point of pain. Essentially some nerve, for whatever reason, is getting too much pressure on it and you end up with sciatica.
